The Amara Countdown Circle

Our Countdown Circle invites you to join with others to explore your part in leading and living our way into the more beautiful world we know to be possible, including by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. Joining online with others as part of a diverse global community, we will face into the urgency of this moment, explore the personal and relational shifts we need to make, and engage in action experiments designed to help us learn our way into a future that enables thriving for all.
January 25, 2021 - September 20, 2021
Rather than charging for participation we are inviting donations to charitable work that directly contributes to regeneration of the natural world.

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Count me in!

Register your interest so we can hold you a place. You don’t have to commit to each month’s circle, but you can join when it suits you the best. We’ll send further details about each of the circles closer to the event.

Countdown is a global initiative to champion and accelerate solutions to the climate crisis, turning ideas into action. This time in history is like no other we have experienced. A tsunami of crises is impacting our world and we are all being invited to connect with our hearts, imagine ourselves into better futures and step powerfully into our leadership.

Our Countdown Circle invites you to join with others to explore your part in leading and living our way into the more beautiful world we know to be possible, including by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030.

The spirit of our Amara work is to inquire deeply in service of timely and transforming action. How might I best place my attention and resources, to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half? What does ‘building back better’ mean for my family, my work, my community? How can I best engage with others – friends, neighbours, politicians, business leaders, colleagues – to activate their leadership towards better futures?

Joining online with others as part of a diverse global community, the Amara Countdown Circle will support you to face into the urgency of this moment, explore the personal and relational shifts you want and need to make, and engage in action experiments designed to help you learn your way into a future that enables thriving for all.

Who can join?

Anyone who feels moved by the climate and related crises, wishes to explore what it means for them personally and/or professionally and is willing to commit to a 9 month development journey in community with others, to connect with their agency, and turn ideas into action. You may be just beginning to consider this crisis or be informed and wondering how to move into timely action – wherever you are on the journey you will be welcome and you will bring inquiries and purpose uniquely to you enriching the whole.

How will the Countdown Circle work?

Each person joining the Countdown Circle is invited to do so as part of a trio. The two people you join with might be friends, colleagues or people we introduce you to who share your desire to step into a deeper exploration of their leadership at this time.

With a monthly pulse over the 9-month period, we will combine a series of ‘inhales’ and ‘exhales’ to breathe life into our work.

Each monthly Countdown Circle will bring the opportunity to share and learn with others as part of the wider group, beyond your trio. As part of a spirited, supportive community you will have the chance to connect, review where you are and further explore how you might make the difference you wish for. We will share resources that you may find helpful, and hope and expect that everyone participating will do the same!

The time working with your trio, between the monthly Countdown Circles, will provide the opportunity for you to test out your action experiments, as well as undertake personal study and reflection. We suggest you meet in your trio at least once between each Countdown Circle.

What will this look like in practice?

The Countdown Circle will meet online on the 3rd or 4th Monday of each month, from January through September 2021. All Circles will be 2 hours, except the opening and closing circles which will be 2.5 hours. All circles to start at 5pm GMT/BST, 7pm CET.

The global Countdown initiative will hold its summit in Edinburgh, UK in October 2021. Watch this space for how we’ll be celebrating our Countdown Circle achievements and preparing for the next Countdown cycle.

How much will it cost?

Amara is offering this programme as part of its social enterprise, and we are keen that it brings diverse people together as part of a truly inclusive process. Rather than charging a fee payable to Amara, we will instead be inviting generous donations to charitable work that directly contributes to regeneration of the natural world.

If you would love to be a part of the Countdown Circle but are not able to donate financially, please get in touch to explore other ways you can give.

Count me in! What do I do next?

Register your interest and secure your place on the top of the page; make sure to hold the 2021 Countdown Circle dates in your diary!

We’ll send further details in due course and we’re happy to chat anytime, if you have questions or simply want to talk through whether the Countdown Circle is right for you.

There are a few things you can be getting on with meanwhile:

  • Learn more about the global Countdown initiative.
  • Register for the TEDxTöölö Countdown event on 23 November, 5-7.30pm GMT / 7-9.30pm CET. We are proud to be sponsoring this online event and hope to see you there! It will be a great opportunity to learn more about the challenges we face and how people around the world are stepping up, as well as to connect with others and find inspiration for your own next steps.
  • Begin to think about who you would like to join the Countdown Circle with. Remember, the trio you are part of will form an important part of your journey. Who do you already know who might be interested? Who do you know who might not (yet) be interested, but you feel moved in invite? Might you meet someone at the TEDx Töölö event to buddy up with?
  • Join our free introductory Countdown Circle webinar on 14 Dec, 5-6pm GMT to meet the facilitation team, learn more and ask any questions you have. Link to registration coming soon.

We sincerely hope that you decide to travel with us on the path to 2030 and beyond by joining the Amara Countdown Circle and look forward to welcoming you. As climate scientist Katherine Hayhoe says:

“It’s not the science that’s the game changer, but the ability to connect at a human to human level and have a shared dialogue about the things that we value and care about, about climate change and what we can individually and collectively do to impact positively.”
